Would you buy your Christmas Festoon lights from Temu this year? or Hoselink?

Can Temu Really Halve Your Costs? We Compared a $89.90 Aussie Product to Its Temu Twin

Temu has built its entire reputation on one promise: the same kind of thing you’d buy elsewhere, for a fraction of the price. And honestly?

Sometimes that promise is true. But “sometimes” is doing a lot of work in that sentence, and the only way to know if you’re getting a genuine bargain or a false economy is to actually dig into the listing properly, not just glance at the price tag.

We decided to put that to the test with a genuinely popular product: solar festoon lights for the backyard. We compared the Hoselink Warm White Solar Festoon Lights Starter Set, a well reviewed Australian favourite, against a similar looking listing from a Temu seller called SUN YEE.

Where Temu Genuinely Wins

To be fair to Temu here, on pure length-for-dollar this is a real win.

Twenty metres of solar string lights with 20 bulbs plus 6 spares for under $60 (or under $50 with the applied credit) is a lot of backyard covered for not much money, and it comes with more lighting modes, dimmable brightness and USB-C charging as a backup option, none of which the Hoselink set offers.

If you want to drape a large area in warm light for a party and don’t need it to survive five years of Australian summers, this is a genuinely reasonable option, and it does come with a real 1-year manufacturer warranty, once you dig past the listing page and into the actual instruction manual.

Where You Need to “Dig Deeper”

This is exactly the part of the Temu experience that catches people out, and it’s worth calling out specifically:

The pricing display is doing some work on you. The listing shows “Est. AU$49.99 after applying credit to AU$59.99.” That’s a classic conversion tactic, anchor a higher number, then show a “discount” that only applies under certain conditions. It’s not dishonest exactly, but it’s designed to make you feel like you’re getting a deal, which is worth being aware of before you check out.

The spec sheet and the actual manual don’t agree with each other. This is the standout finding from digging into this listing. The product’s own spec sheet says “Battery Properties: Without Battery,” which would be genuinely alarming for a solar light. But the actual instruction manual (a properly branded document, this time under the name “zuitome,” not “SUN YEE”) clearly describes a built-in rechargeable battery, including warranty exclusions for “battery degradation.” The spec sheet was simply wrong, or auto-filled from a generic template. You’d only catch this by reading past the headline listing and into the actual manual, exactly the “digging deeper” we’re talking about.

The brand name on the listing doesn’t match the brand on the product itself. Temu’s storefront lists this as sold by “SUN YEE,” but the instruction manual is branded “zuitome” (model ZU-LI001). This is common with marketplace dropshipping, the storefront name and the actual manufacturer are often different companies, which matters if you ever need to chase a warranty claim.

No remote included, even though the hardware has a remote sensor built in. The panel has a physical remote sensor, but the remote itself isn’t included in this listing, so you’re controlling modes and brightness via the panel’s own button instead.

The Real Lesson: Compare Line by Line, Not Just Price by Price

Temu can absolutely help you halve your costs on genuinely comparable products, but “comparable” is the operative word, and you only find out if something is truly comparable by reading the actual specifications, and ideally the manual, side by side, not just eyeballing the photos and the price.

In this case, the Temu listing wins on raw length-per-dollar and comes with a genuine warranty once you dig into the manual, but its own spec sheet contradicts that manual on something as basic as whether it has a battery.

The Hoselink set wins on listing accuracy, included accessories (remote, spare bulbs), and Australian-based support. For some buyers, that clarity and convenience is worth the extra $30–40.

This is also a great real-world example of something we teach in our digital marketing courses: pricing psychology, “credit” and anchor pricing, and how a well structured product listing builds (or erodes) buyer trust.

If you’re building or improving your own online store or product listings and want to understand these conversion tactics from the marketer’s side of the fence, our Landing Pages, Google Ads, Lead Capture & Analytics Training Course walks through exactly how effective (and sometimes manipulative) product and landing pages are built, so you can either use these techniques ethically in your own business, or spot them a mile off as a shopper.
