Mailchimp vs TextMagic: What happens to unused monthly credits?

Why “Monthly SMS Credits” Aren’t Always What They Seem

We recently went through Mailchimp’s SMS sign-up flow (it’s owned by Intuit these days) and hit a screen worth flagging for anyone doing digital and SMS marketing: a recommended 1,000 SMS credits for A$28.16 a month, with higher tiers running all the way up to 20,000 credits for around A$197.

It’s presented as a simple subscription choice, pick your tier, add your card, done.

But the detail that matters is easy to miss on that screen: these are recurring monthly subscription credits, and unused credits don’t roll over.

We Just Got a 92% Email Open Rate.

Here’s Why That’s a Really Big Deal

Most businesses would be thrilled with a 20% email open rate. We just looked at the stats on one of our automated welcome emails for our free payroll training sample, and the numbers stopped us in our tracks:

  • 373 emails sent,
  • 92% opened, and
  • 45% clicked through to explore further.

For context, the average email marketing open rate across most industries sits somewhere between 20% and 35%, and a “good” click-through rate is usually anywhere from 2% to 5%.

We didn’t just beat those numbers, we roughly tripled the open rate benchmark and blew past the click-through benchmark by a factor of ten or more.

So what’s actually going on here?

What Makes Facebook and Instagram “Addictive” for Teenagers?

Meta settled for $23 billion because of these Features

Meta has agreed to pay up to $US18 billion ($23.6 billion AUD) and roll out a new set of child-safety features across Facebook and Instagram, settling a landmark case brought by nearly every US state over claims the platforms were deliberately designed to be addictive to teenagers.

The deal came together right before Mark Zuckerberg was due to take the stand in a California courtroom, and it’s one of the largest consumer protection settlements in US history.

This is bad news for Meta but can your business benefit by understanding what users want to see on social media?

Would You Borrow $50,000 for a Holiday? What does Revolut think?

Revolut is encouraging it, but a digital asset is a better purchase.

We got an email this week from Revolut, the newer deposit-taking neobank operating in Australia, and it’s worth talking about, not because it’s unusual, but because it’s a textbook example of a marketing message that sounds harmless and is actually a pretty terrible financial idea for most people.

The pitch was simple: apply for a personal loan of up to $50,000, comparison rates from 6.99%, terms of 1 to 7 years, approved and deposited into your account “instantly.”

Is Google Harassing You To Increase Your Advertising Spend?

Is Google Harassing You To Increase Your Advertising Spend?

Google now achieves billions of searches every single day, making it without doubt, the world’s leading search engine.

So, with the search market effectively cornered, and most of the planet seemingly online at any given time, businesses are only too aware that featuring in Google searches can be central to getting their brand in front of their target audience.

The real problem though, is that with high competition, many operators know just how difficult it can be to rank organically (that is for FREE). In many cases they also feel ill-equipped, under-skilled or lacking in know-how to effectively manage online marketing in-house.

What is a Minimum Viable Website?

If you’ve never had a website before, it can be easy to get excited — or overwhelmed; pick your emotion! — by the prospect of all the exciting features you can add to it. So you’d better get cracking, adding all those features in to your website, right?

Wrong.

Moving away from TELSTRA Online Essentials Website Builder

There are dozens of different website builders available from TELSTRA Online Essentials to Wix and they all promise ease of use, powerful features and the promise of more traffic, more conversions and more MONEY. One problem with these website builders is that most website designers don’t take them seriously but what I don’t like about them is they tie you to Telstra, Wix or the website builders owner.

I started using a website builder when I worked on our very first website and I loved it so much I couldn’t change – until the developer decided to stop supporting it and my hosting company stopped offering it. That was a scary time because I was starting to rely on my website. It’s even scarier to depend on average website design software these days! See how we helped an electrician migrate away from Telstra Online Essentials and onto a WordPress website hosted with Crazy Domains.

One CRM is Streaks ahead for real estate agents and HR managers even when it’s free

I’ve written about CRM’s for real estate agents in the past because they started popping up several years ago and all of a sudden you just need to inquire about a property for sale and you’d be on the “keep warm” segment of the agents mailing list!

I’ve since found a great CRM that is available on a Freemium model and it is built to work right in your email program!

Do you want an email address with your order?

Purchasing a domain name is cheap, setting up hosting is cheap, installing WordPress is FREE but if you’re not technically savvy and you’re trying to do your own digital marketing then it’s Crazy what you need to pay for.

I’ve been working with Aussie and US hosting companies for over 10 years and there is a LOT of competition so these hosting companies tend to focus on the monthly price. Most business owners didn’t understand the value of their hosting several years ago and just went with the cheapest option but here are a couple reasons I recommend you spend a little extra..

Is there any real benefit of Instagram for Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing is the buzz word for getting more website visitors, getting more clicks on your website and basically getting more customers but sometimes it seems that you just participate because the experts tell you to!

In some cases it is important to stake your place or get your own URL at websites like YouTube or Facebook but the purpose for many sites has most small business owners baffled.

Instagram serves one very obvious purpose to me – it helps you get images from your smartphone onto your website. This means that your staff or contractors can do some of the work that you’d normally pay a digital marketer for.

MailChimp offers free Google ReTargeting Service

I wrote recently about OmniChannel marketing and some readers weren’t sure what this means – essentially it means using lots of different ways of reaching potential customers using services like Twitter, Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, MailChimp and other email marketing software etc.

When you use each of these digital marketing tools separately they can be a LOT of hard work so the best thing to do is create a digital strategy that leverages tasks that you can do easily from your mobile phone like Facebook posts or Instagram shares, but that you can use several times.

Omnichannel Marketing works best with Google Tag Manager

If your digital marketing is like most small businesses it is a collection of different tools that different “experts” told you you had to have, so they set it up for you! The problem with that is you’ll have too many “experts” and a right royal mess that someone at some stage will have to clean up!

Google Tag Manager is one tool that helps to bring all the mess together into something much more organised.

Facebook is changing it’s Ad Insights

If you advertising on Facebook or you want to, then you’ll be interested to learn that they are changing the way they demonstrate insights.

The key changes relate to the removal of these metrics:

  • Offers Saved and Cost Per Offers Saved
  • Relevance Score
  • Messaging Replies and Cost per Messaging Reply

The important ones to consider are your relevance score and what that will be replaced by and you can learn more about that here on Facebook.

If your ads take Facebook users to a page that is not relevant or doesn’t keep their interest you may find the cost of your ads will increase. Google do something similar but in their quest to outsmart Google Facebook are now offering insights and metrics on Quality Ranking, Engagement Rate Ranking, and Conversion Rate Ranking.

In the end what you really want is a sale or a lead and there are ways of measuring the success of these campaigns. Not sure where to start? Get a FREE Digital Marketing Strategy consultation.

Is business quiet right now? Wish you could send a quick message to past clients?

I’ve spoke to all sorts of business lately from tradies, shop keepers and car repairers and what stands out most is how they feel when their business is quiet. What many business owners don’t realise (unless they have a good network of business owning friends) is that if their business is slow there is a good chance that many other businesses are also slow.

It’s times like these that the cheapest way of getting new sales is by sending an email to your past clients and give them a good reason to buy or use your services NOW.
